Till Death Do Us Part. A Fearless Bridal Session

It’s funny for me to watch Applehead Studio evolve and take it’s own shape based simple on the best way to have fun while we work. While I used to go out and shoot like a madman, proof 100 or so images and sell a big collection of 75+ images, now when we do these...

Nancy - These photos are super great. What a fun idea. So creative. I agree, Katie is always all smiles and giggles. John adores the ground she walks on and would do anything for her and it shows in this story line of photos. I love the pictures. Some great shots and angles.

molly - These shots are amazing. What a cool idea!

Applehead - Of course Darren. We shot in the deep dark woods up near Long Lake just of the St Margaret’s Bay Road.

Darren - Can I ask where these fantastic photos were taken?

Katie - Love them! And I agree, you have an amazing assistant!

Mike Gallant - I love these images , very creative. As i was scrolling down to the one where he’s dead and shes fishing, i had stopped and said i’d be really funny to see him in the water….. then the next one was just that….. i laughed pretty hard!

I must say that water looked cold… what a trooper to go along with that!

Keep up the great work Liam and crew!

Jason - Nice shoot!

goodbye Trash the Dress. hello Fearless Bridal Sessions.

Did you know Google was originally called BackRub? So I figured if a wee little company like Google could make a name change then so could I. So I’m officially done with the term ‘Trash the Dress’. I’ll admit I ran head first into the idea of it. We’ve trashed a few, burned a few…and...

Dane Sanders - Dramatic. Nice work.

Emily - Love these shots. Wonderfully daring and so fun. The night shots are awesome.

Colette - LOVE the new term. ‘Cause not every woman wants to ruin their beautiful wedding dress, but a lot of women would love to rock out in it and show that just because it’s white, doesn’t mean you’re pure. Brilliant.

Julie - Love the pics….great job Steph!! (and Liam too..)

Trash the Dress – behind the scenes

At the end of a five hour trash the dress session w Fraser + Jen we found ourselves in the woods with a setting sun and 4 feet of questionable mud and water between us and the place we needed to get to. There was also the question of ‘how are we going to get...

Awesome photos!

Dam. Sarah + Ryan’s Trash the Dress Session

When I was in university at SMU I was looking for part time jobs in the summer months and one of them was at a recycling center over in Spryfield. I saw an ad in the paper, called them up and the guys said, “yeah come on over for an interview”. So I roll up...

Marse - LOVE LOVE LOVE the last one. xo

Sarah - Thise owls were totally Stephanie’s fault.

Trash the Dress Session with Adam + Sarah

I can almost guarantee you that Sarah’s dress was cleaner at the end of her Trash the Dress shoot than it was at the end of the the night on Saturday. To be honest with you, I think Trash the Dress is kind of a bad name but its certainly started a lot of discussion....

Trash the Dress PEI – photography vs video

I remember sitting in Jason Groupp’s studio in New York City thinking ‘Hell No, I’m not getting into video. I know nothing about it and the learning curve is too steep and expensive.’ Well, I’m a liar. I love it and I just found out the other day that Jessica (my lovely assistant) does too. So...

it’s Wedding Season in Halifax

I feel like a farmer at this time of year. An image farmer. May-October is the time when I kiss Marcia and Lola goodbye and work like a dog for 6 months. For months I’ve been plotting, sketching, thinking and collaborating and on Saturday it was finally time to ‘nut up or shut up’. It’s...

Linda Buchanan - These wedding shots are exceptional. I think they are pretty well the best I’ve ever seen. Very out of the norm….good for you!

Jeff - Phenomenal post … those shots of the bride laying down are really spectacular – amazing what a couple of wedding photographers can do in an unsafe, 10 x 10 poorly lit space. And sorry if I temporarily blinded you.

allison - Amazing job with amazing people! THese are beautiful, and you are welcome here to our little island anytime!

Technical Difficulties…

If there’s any one thing that keeps me awake at nite its the technical difficulties of a website and blog. If you don’t have a site…you don’t have a business. So I apologize for the down time and confusion as we make a few changes to the website and blog. There promises to be lots...

tenzin gyatso - i remember the countdown to the “world premiere” of this video on mtv. it was “exclusive mtv” for about a month, i think. everybody was dying to see it. they lacked…what is the word?…patience?

the joys of having a ten foot satellite dish in the country.

Trash the Dress PEI – Katharina – part III

So we packed up for PEI in 2 cars, both stacked to the rafters with gear. Light stands, cameras, lenses, smoke machines, strobes, hot lights, appleboxes (custom made if you’re looking to buy some by the way) and more light modifiers than you can shake a stick at. I also had a mind full of...

Trash the Dress PEI – Julia

I knew the second that I met Julia at the Brides 2010 show in Halifax that we would end up shooting something fun together that was wedding related. Despite what you may have read, I don’t really think we had any real intention of sitting her in a pile of cow poo in her wedding...

Trash the Dress – Prince Edward Island – part I – Griffen

Griffen is a tattoo artist. Eric plays guitar. That was all I knew when I found out Griffen wanted to do a Trash the Dress shoot with us in Summerside, Prince Edward Island on Sunday. She had a black wedding dress she would wear for one shoot and a white wedding dress, the one she...

Cicely - This shoot was so stellar. I really love the JMC. Amazing work Liam!

Griffen - I can’t believe that it burned that quick. They should put warnings on those things. I think I look like a witch. I’m loving these. I want more.

Cheryl - This is like MacBeth witches gone hawt. Love the last picture. Love the black boots even more. I was a tad disappointed with the closing of the comments section on the Journal website. I had a few colorful words to share….

Karen - I love the TTD shoots that you do. These shots are absolutely awesome. I cringe at the fact that my wedding dress is sitting in an airtight-unbreakable cardboard box…I would do anything to have a TTD session with you LH just to be able to wear it again. Keep up the amazing work.

Julia - This scene reminds me of something you would see on a Stanley Kubrick movie. A twisted bridal version of a Clockwork Orange perhaps. My boots look like they’re ready to snuff someone out. Kaethe’s do too. Love the shots you, Jeff and Heather have posted! Thanks again for all the fun! Twas AMAZING!

Trash the Dress training…

As I was leaving Felicity Bridal the other day to pick up a few dresses for our Trash the Dress PEI project, Mickey came running out. “I have an idea for a wedding dress shot,” she said. “Let’s dress up Christina and take her picture putting money in a meter.” Done. Concept + Art Direction:Mickey...

Leslie - The middle shot of her putting the money in the meter and looking at the camera is one of my VERY favourite shots. Truly stunning!!!

tenzin gyatso - stunning. the epitome of pulchritude.

Cicely - FANNNNNTASSSSTTTIIICCC lighting! Hard but soft. I really love the first shot.

STEPH - Liam – you are on fire! That top shot is ridiculously amazing.

Julia - I adore the first picture; the photography and focus is remarkable. The dress looks comfortable, classy and perfectly elegant without having anything flashy on it. I think the setting and her action brings alot of attention and focus to the dress which makes it stand out more than it would in a regular bridal magazine. I’m really impressed, well done.

Joann Durdle - WoW…I love these:)

Charlotte - I love the 2nd one with the light shining through the veil, and the look on her face is perfect. Love that shot!

Jason Miller - Bravo! Great shots man!

Trash the Dress Project in PEI

Crazy ideas sometimes emerge as amazing projects. Trash the Dress PEI is one of those crazy ideas. We need to clear the air here first. I’ve been to a few wedding shows and Trash the Dress discussions usually start with a gasp and end with a No Way. Perhaps this is because I show people...

mireille godin evans - Liam my dear, if you need a volunteer to burn a dress…spit on it, throw food at it, watch it get run over y a dump truck…..I shal sacrifice mine for your cause. seriously…..If you want it let me know……I’ll make it happen.

Cheryl - Burning your dress and sitting in mud may be optional however I highly recommend them – it’s fun as HELL!

Anita Crosby - You Sir are amazing! I love seeing this day through your eyes, your lens.
I commented to Jennie and Dave that “you were everywhere!” and that “you were truly ‘with us’ from the moment our day began, until the last ‘moment’ that needed to be captured”. Through it all you were fun and so easy to be with. Again, thank-you!

Wedding Photography Shootout – Behind the Scenes Trash the Dress

Wedding Photographer Shootout: Posers

Once again, five of Halifax’s finest wedding photographers (and me) hit the studio last nite to come up with ideas and then fight over who’s going to get to pop the flash first. If this was a typical classroom setting, the six of us would have all been sitting in the front row with our...

Trash the Dress Behind the Scenes

I finally got my hands on the video we shot during the Trash the Dress shoot in Mexico. Here’s the scene we had to work with. One big hole in the ground, ropes, ladders, french scuba divers and randomly placed holes the perfect size for a photographer to fall through if he’s not looking where...

Toe to Toe in Mexico

If you’ve been following my blog for any length of time, you know there have been a few times where, during a shoot, we’ve run into wasp nests, gun wielding RCMP, broken ankles, burning dresses and unfortunate falls in deep, wet holes in caves. I shot more weddings in the rain last year than I...

tenzin gyatso - great piece of writing, leo! thanks for sharing the story and the images. :)

also, go canada!

Wendy - Hi,
That’s what I call bad luck… I hope it will work out later..
In the mean time, I want to ask you for a favour…
I might be interested in buying the trashed wedding dress after the comming shoot. It doesn’t have to be cleaned after the shoot. It’s for a good cause, so feel free to contact me for more info or pass my message to Jennie.
Thank you for your time

Wendy (herwyn.w@skynet.be)

Brent Denny - Leam, You not only take a great picture but you tell a good story too. It was pleasure watching you work even with the little toe incident. We are all looking forward to the rest of your work.
